#124. Cracked Betas and College Esports: The Good, the Bad, and the Banned
Wednesday May 17, 2023
Wednesday May 17, 2023
Hello, and welcome to another episode of the FGC Philosophy podcast! Today, we have two exciting topics that we'll be discussing, so buckle up and get ready for an entertaining and informative episode.
"Hey, it's Tavian “The Philosopher” Napier, and as the assistant director of esports and arena at Western Michigan University, I've been lucky enough to turn my passion for gaming into a career. I organize and produce tournaments, I've competed in fighting game tournaments, and I've even tried my hand at commentary. Whether I'm behind the scenes or in the thick of the action, gaming is my love and my life, and I'm excited to share my experiences and insights with you on this podcast."
First up, we'll be talking about the MHSEL tournament, which was hosted at the Western Michigan University Esports Arena. As someone who Produced the tournament, I'll be sharing my personal experience and insights into what makes this tournament so special. We'll discuss the structure of the tournament, the games that were played, the atmosphere at the arena, and much more. If you're a fan of esports or just curious about what happens at major tournaments, you won't want to miss this segment.
Now, on to our second topic. Competitive fighting game players have been using a cracked beta to play the game, and I believe they should be banned. We'll explore what that means, the ethical issues surrounding the use of a cracked beta, the impact on the community, and whether or not it's fair to those who have paid for the game. We'll also look at the potential consequences for those who choose to use a cracked beta and the reasons why some players might feel justified in using it. This is a topic that's sure to generate some debate, so make sure to tune in and share your thoughts with us.
TLDR, we have a great episode lined up for you today. Whether you're an esports fan, a fighting game enthusiast, or just someone who enjoys thought-provoking discussions, there's something here for you. So, sit back, relax, and let's dive into today's topics.

#123. Hosting Back to Back Esports and My Fighting Game Future
Monday Apr 24, 2023
Monday Apr 24, 2023
It's been a long week but I've survived! This weekend I had to host back-to-back events on the same day, leading to a 12+ hour day! The first event is a grade school Rocket League tournament and an academy awards-eque event. The Rec-cademies were for the student staff of the Student Recreation Center, the department my job is under.
I also discuss my future in fighting games and how I'm currently feeling. I've had some time to reflect on what I want out of fighting games. There's much more conversation to be had, but the conversation starts now.
Hope you enjoy!

#122. Another Trophy for Western Michigan University Esports
Monday Apr 17, 2023
Monday Apr 17, 2023
Welcome to FGC Philosophy, I'm Tavian "Philosopher" Napier, and this is the place where we level up inside and outside the virtual arena. In today's episode, I am excited to share my experience of competing in a tournament at Bethel University in South Bend, Indiana. We had teams for both Overwatch and Rocket League, and I want to talk about what I learned, how the tournament went, and just my overall experience. I think it's important to reflect on what we go through and share our learnings to help others improve as well. For those who don't know me, I'm the assistant director of Esports and Arena at West Michigan University and the founder of the Kalamazoo fighting game community. I love competitive gaming and have been working in production, tournament organizing, commentating, and competing for a long time, so I hope to provide some value to those interested in the field or interested in bettering themselves. So, let's dive in!

#121. Focus
Monday Mar 27, 2023
Monday Mar 27, 2023
Hey all,
This episode is I'm taking time to reflect on my focus and dealing with Attention Deficit Disorder. I don't see ADD as some sort of "death sentence". Yes, it IS hard to focus at times, but I've learned over the years that I can improve my focus. I don't have to let ADD dictate what I'm doing or thinking at any given moment. I still have much more to speak on in the future, but for now, please enjoy this episode.
Thanks,
Tavian "Philocypher Napier

#119. I Hosted a Collegiate Rocket League Tournament: Here’s What I’ve Learned.
Tuesday Mar 07, 2023
Tuesday Mar 07, 2023
Welcome to FGC Philosophy! In this episode, Tavian "The Philosopher" Napier discusses his recent experience organizing a Rocket League Invitational Collegiate tournament. He shares some of the key takeaways he learned from the planning and leading up to the event, marketing, expenses, budgeting, and communication with staff and other teams. Tavian also highlights the importance of clear communication with staff and setting boundaries when accommodating other teams.
Tavian shares how budgeting was not his strongest suit, but through the experience of hosting the event, he learned the importance of budgeting and how it helped him visualize where the money was going and how much money he was generating from the event. He also talks about the production and how he and his team did well, but there were areas they could still improve upon. Finally, Tavian talks about the results of the tournament and how it was great to see some diversity in the teams participating, and he is excited to keep working on future events.
